That happened in Isaiah’s case with the exile. Some seed falls on the path with no soil, some on rocky ground with little soil, some on soil which contains thorns, and some on good soil. As the man who sowed the seed goes about his business day by day, the seed begins to have an effect. And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so … To answer it we have to note the circumstances of the chapter. There is much more that can be said about the parable and about parables, but this will be enough for now. This is he who received seed by the wayside. The soil on the path was hard because it was packed down. That was the end of the parable. The explanation of parables is explanatory for it and the others to come. No, the parables present the claims of the present form of the kingdom in such a way that only those who trust Jesus will understand the new direction in the plan of God. But the disciples believed in the person and the work of Jesus, and so further revelation came to them, not just in the immediate explanation of the parable, or in the constant teaching of Jesus, but in the fact that the Spirit open their “eyes” and their “hearts” to understand. So what was it that the disciples possessed and the others did not? Good soil represents people who hear the message and live it in their lives. 5. On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. Jesus first gives a basic answer (13) which is then applied to “them” (14, 15) and then to the disciples (16,17). When Jesus told this parable, he felt the frustration of planting seeds (teaching and preaching) that would never produce grain – and he knew the disciples would later feel this same frustration. Sowing seeds was something Jesus’ listeners knew something about. 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful, 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”. But the principle was that if they continue to sow, if they continued to expend any effort for the greater cause, there would be a result, there would be people coming down the road from the east to return to the land. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom.
